Conquering Life’s Challenges With Courage

by France Alviz

Joachim Eldrich B. Vega, an 11-year-old with severe hemophilia A, is proof that no challenge is too big with determination and support. Known as Achim to his family and friends, he recently earned a Merit Award at the Thailand International Mathematics Olympiad. This was his first international competition, and he hopes to join more in the future.

Living with hemophilia, a condition that causes easy and serious bleeding, hasn’t been easy for Achim. He often deals with joint pain and other physical struggles, but help from Hemophilia Advocates-Philippines (HAP) and donations of life-saving treatments, like factor concentrates from Laurie Kelley, Project SHARE, and others, have given him the chance to live a nearly normal life.

When Achim was five, he lost his younger brother, Matthew, to a brain bleed. Though this was a heartbreaking time for him and his family, it gave them the strength to focus on Achim’s future. His parents encouraged him to concentrate on school, and he embraced learning with all his heart.

Achim now shines in academics, joining contests and even winning awards. At his school, University of the East Caloocan, his teachers and classmates support him, while at home, he dreams of becoming a chef as he enjoys cooking and baking.

Achim’s story shows the power of love, community, and perseverance. If his journey inspires you, you can support HAP’s work by donating at https://www.hemophilia.ph/donate-1.
